05/02/2012: The positive start to the Tom Creedon Cup with wins over Nemo Rangers and St Michaels continued with success over Naomh Abán in the 1/4 final of the competition yesterday. Playing in very difficult weather and pitch conditions, Mayfield produced a good team performance and held the nerve to overcome a late Naomh Abán charge.
Mayfield enjoyed good possession in the first period and despite the conditions kicked six points. Half time score: Mayfield 0-6 to Naoumh Abán 0-3. Mayfield increased the lead by two further points in the second half before Naomh Abán scored a goal against the run of play. A determined final few minutes and a considerable seven minutes of added time saw Mayfield hold on for a deserved one point win. Final score: Mayfield 0-10 to Naomh Abán 1-6.
The semi-final will now be played on Tuesday next 14th February 2012 against Valley Rovers in Cloughduv at 8pm [To Be Confirmed].
02/02/2012: Mayfield Intermediate Football Team continued the good start in the Tom Creedon Cup competition with a good win over St. Michaels in round two. A great team performance saw Mayfield ahead by four points at the half time break. Mayfield 0-9 to St. Michaels 0-5.
The team continued the strong performance into the second half. An early and opportune goal from Roy Scannell following a poor kick-out from the St Michaels Goalkeeper gave Mayfield a strong lead. Mayfield drove on with a further six points and a strong defensive display. Final score Mayfield 1-15 to St. Michaels 0-8.
Mayfield will play Naomh Abán in the 1/4 final on Saturday 4th February 2012 at 2.30pm in Ballyvourney.
24/01/2012: The Club season began with the start of the Tom Creedon Cup competition at the weekend. Mayfield were drawn at home against Nemo Rangers in this knock-out competition.
A competitive game for this early in the year saw Nemo in front by four points at the half time break. A positve second half performance, particularly in defense, gave Mayfield a deserved win by the narrowest margin. Final Score: Mayfield 1-11 to Nemo Rangers 2-7.
Mayfield are drawn to play St Michaels in the next round on Thursday 2nd February 2012 at 8pm in Mourneabbey.
01/11/2011: The destination of the John Quirke Cup was finally decided when the Junior A Hurling County Championship Final Replay took place on Sunday last in Pairc Uí Rinn. The old cliché "A game of two halves" aptly describes this game. A solid first half display saw our lads 0-5 to 0-1 after 20 minutes. The turning point of the half came in the 27th minute with a Charleville goal against the run of play to draw level. Ian Looney restored the lead by one point before the half time whistle Mayfield 0-7 to Chareville 1-3.
Mayfield opened the second half brightly with Nicky adding a point to put Mayfield ahead by two points. The second goal of the game came in the 34th minute to put Charleville ahead, a lead not to be relinquished for the remainder of the game. Our lads continued to fight until the final whistle but the honours went to the North Cork Club. Our club can be very proud of this team and the fantastic championship journey we have been on with them. Thanks to the Team and Management for the Journey 2011.
10/10/2011: It was an emotional evening last Saturday when Mayfield Junior Hurlers breached a thirty three year gap to reach the County Junior Hurling Championship Final 2011. A tremendous team effort and three cracking goals gave Mayfield a deserved place in the County Final over Dungourney in Pairc Uí Chaoimh. It was a pulsating game of hurling watched by a large crowd and they were treated to all that is best in championship hurling.
Mayfield stormed into a four point lead in the first 10 minutes with points from both Kelly brothers and Ian Looney. Mayfield's opening goal came in the 17th minute when Patrick Duggan rattled the net. The Mayfield defense were excellent with Brian Punch and Gary Lehane in outstanding form. Darren Wise in the Mayfield goal produced a magnificent save to deny Dungourney a certain goal to leave the half time score Mayfield 1-7 to Dungourney 0-8. The second half brought sustained pressure from Dungourney but it was Mayfield that pushed on with Duggan's second goal and Shane Kelly adding a further point from play. Mayfield's third goal was the body blow to Dungourney as Terry Lotty shot from 35 yards to the net and put Mayfield through to the County Final. Full time score Mayfield 3-12 to Dungourney 0-15.
Our U15 Hurling team had a fantastic win over Clonakilty in the County Championship 1/4 Final in Mayfield after extra time.
The County Final is due to be played on Sunday 23rd October 2011 at 3.45pm (Venue to be advised). The club would appreciate the support of the community of Mayfield behind the team for the final. Please put out your red and white colours and get behind the team.
