Latest P.R.O. Notes 3rd March 2008

• A very spirited performance by the Junior Footballers this weekend but they didn’t take their chances and ultimately paid the price for not putting up the scores. Rathpeacon finishing was a lot more clinical. Richard Quaine played well in goal and his kick outs always gave Mayfield a platform for attack. Barry Hegarty rolled back the years with a solid performance throughout this game. Robert Furney was sublime at fullback and was well supported in defence by Niall O’Donnell and Eoin Barry. Up front the attack never gave up, Dean Grainger is constantly improving and Ian Looney and Ian Fleming just need to get their kicking boots on. Mayfield eventually went down to a 7pt loss the score was 1 - 10 to 0 - 06pts. Fixtures don’t get any easier as next weekend we’re out against White Cross but there is a solid panel being formed now.

U21 Football championship draw was made last week; Mayfield versus St. Finbarrs It is expected to be played in late of March.
• Congratulations to Shane Kelly on his participation in the Fitzgibbon Cup last weekend. He played an integral part in his college’s victory in what has gone down as one of the greatest finals seen in the modern era. Congrats to all in W.I.T. Hopefully he will bring the winning mentality back to Mayfield.
• The Ken Murray Centra Mayfield Street leagues are continuing on Saturdays at 12.45on the pitches. Football boots would be advisable. Everyone involved will be taking a break for St. Patrick’s and Easter weekends and the plan is to move to Friday nights when the nights get longer.
Football Street Leagues for children from the Age of 5 - 11
Time 12.45

• Minor footballers had a well deserved 2 point victory over St. Michael’s. Colm O’Donovan gave a good solid performance in goal but Man of Match by miles was Francis Quirke who is improving with every outing. Up front David Malone proved a revelation. Brian O’Leary tried hard and was a constant treat as was Cian O’Connor. The final result 1 - 10 to 1 - 08 was the way it ended.

• Lotto Numbers 18, 20, 30.
No Winner. Next week the prize will be of 5,600 Eur. This prize money is a record amount for the club, exceeding our highest amount of May 2006. We are 28 weeks without a winner.

• The Intermediate Footballers were brought back to earth with a reality check after the highs of the Celebrity Banisteoir when they began there league campaign against a strong Mallow side in the Kelleher Shield last Sunday afternoon in a blustery and showery Mallow. Mayfield failed at every stage to get a grip on this game. Having dominated for periods in the game Mayfield’s forwards never got the scores that they should have. Ciaran Brosnan always tried hard as did full back Padraig Fitzgerald but Mayfield gave away position too cheaply and were subsequently punished at every opportunity. Our centre field partnership never broke even and that resulted in our forwards being starved of possession. When the forwards eventually got the ball their kicking boots seemed to be on the wrong way round. Roy Scannell and Terry Lotty tried hard throughout the game and a goal by Alan Kelly brought the sides closer but Mayfield were always going to rue the missed opportunities. The game ended 1 - 06 to 1 - 03 and Mayfield now move on to next week with a local derby against St. Nicks.

Fixtures: Intermediate Footballers v St. Nicks, Junior Footballers are out next weekend versus White Cross 11.00am in Whites Cross. Minor Footballers are out next Sunday 11.00am away to Kinsale. (Watch out for posters for updates in times towards the end of the week).
