Latest P.R.O. Notes 28th April 2008

Mayfield u12’s played St. Vincent’s in the Football Championship over the weekend. Due to Mayfield’s excellent league form in Section B they were put into the top level for the Championship. Despite the step up in class Mayfield managed to fashion a two point victory. The first half performance was the foundation for this win. Goals from Lee Cooney and Ciaran O’Donovan helped Mayfield on the road to victory. To Vincent’s credit they came back at Mayfield in the second half but the lads just held on.

There will be no Street Leagues on Friday 16th May due to the CelebrityBanisteoir final in Dublin.

• It has been confirmed that the final of Celebrity Banisteoir will take place on Friday May16th in Parnell Park at 7pm. Maryland of Westmeath are our opponents in that final. We would ask all the community to get behind the team and show the club colours on your windows. Don’t forget to view next Sundays show as it will feature the semi-final clash of Mayfield versus Kiltimagh.

U16’s Football team had a comprehensive victory over local neighbours Glanmire during the week. Liam Horgan, Darren Crowley and the always confident Olan Bond played well on the night.

• The minor footballers had their maiden victory in the Minor football league against Killshannig during the week. Mayfield were very impressive from start to finish and should have been ahead by more at the break . To their credit Killshannig fought back and led by three points with minutes left on the clock but the story wasn’t finished . Nicky Kelly ,quieter than usual, was brought down for a penalty and he duly dispatched the kick. As the ball was kicked out for the final passage of play the same player Nicky Kelly ran on to the ball and was fouled, Rob Mullane stepped up to dispatch his eighth free of the night. Colm O’Donovan was outstanding in goal on the night. Danny O’Gorman and Shane Creedon also excelled for Mayfield. The final result was 1 – 13 to 2 - 09. Well done to all concerned. They now look forward to the non-exam league with a bounce in their step.

The Junior 2 hurling team had their first outing last week away to Delaney’s. Carl Field managed and organised the team and then refereed the game. It was great to see his fellow selector Sean Long giving instruction from the line. On the night Mayfield just edged the victory with a last gasp goal. Martin Weathers in goal was superb as was fullback Paul Lucey in front of him. In the centre or the pitch Ian Fleming was outstanding and improved as the game went on. A good work out for all concerned. Mayfield went on to win the game 2 - 06 to 1 - 07.

• The Junior A footballers went out of championship last Saturday evening against Rathpeacon. They were in the game right up to the half way point, but their challenge faded rapidly in the second half. All credit to the players that played but due to illness, injury, and social occasion Mayfield were short 9 of the first round team. For the second year in a row the backdoor systems has us out of competitive championship games in five days. We need to seriously examine our attitude towards this competition. We need a strong selection committee and players need to train very hard if they want results at Junior A level.

• The Junior A hurlers had a great workout against Blarney during the week .The final score line 2 – 14 to 2 - 11 in favour of Blarney was justified, yet Mayfield had many positives to take out of the game. The panel will learn a lot from this loss. Eoin Barry and Colm O’Sullivan marshalled the backline well. Upfront Ciaran Brosnan and Eamon O’Brien were always a treat. On the night we had the return of many of the senior player and that was great to see. Dan Lucey, Trevor Boyd and Maurice Barry will improve with the upcoming games. Unfortunately the championship has been brought in earlier than expected but the lads will rise to the challenge. They now look forward to the first round of the championship against Nemo Rangers next Saturday night in Ballinlough at 7pm.

• The minor hurlers had a great victory against an excellent Ballinhassig side at the weekend. The game was a joy to watch, competitive and whole-hearted throughout. In defence Mayfield were strong and resolute with great performances from Ronan O’Sullivan and Gary Lehane. Danny O’Gorman was a rock in the centre. Upfront Rob Mullane and David Malone got scores when needed. The work rate of this team is there to be admired and the desire to win was there for all of the large attendance to see.
