Girls U10 Football Team

11/06/2010   The U10 Girls Football League got under way on the 16th May 2010. Our first match was away to Lisgoold on a lovely sunday evening. We played very well considering that it was the first game of football for most of the girls. They played with great heart and determination and did Mayfield very proud despite coming up against a very strong Lisgoold side. It was a very enjoyable game to watch and many thanks to all the parents who travelled to Lisgoold to support the girls. The next match was against Rockbán on 30th May 2010. The Rockbán team proved to be very strong and far too experienced against a very young Mayfield side. Again, Mayfield played with great enthusiasm and spirit and did themselves and the club very proud.
Future Dates to Note: We hope to play a challenge match on wednesday 16th June 2010 versus Carrigtwohill in Mayfield. The week of the 21st June 2010 we hope to have games against Bride Rovers and Aghada. That should complete our league matches until September 2010 when the final games of the league against Glanmire, Watergrasshil and Fermoy will be played. If there are any parents or others wishing to get involved with the team it would be gratefully appreciated. Contact Marian 0872660592.

20/04/2010   U12 League Final 2009: Saturday April 17th, Mayfield U12 girls played the long awaited final against Rockbán in the 2009 mid Cork league. A large crowd turned out in Mayfield to support the girls in the glorious sunshine. The match got off to a great start with Mayfield opening the game with some great points. Rockbán responded well to the Mayfield challenge with some fast goals and points. The second half was a tough battle for both teams with Rockbán narrowly defeating Mayfield by just 1 point. The team played some great football and with some lovely passing. As Mayfield Ladies Football club was only formed in January 2009 this was a fantastic achievement for the girls to reach the final. As always an outstanding performance from all the girls on the day and also throughout the year. WELL DONE GIRLS!!!!A special thanks to all the parents and supporters.

Monday 19th April saw Mayfield play the last of their league games at home against Inch. The scoring started within seconds of the throw in with Inch off to a flying start, Mayfield battled hard against the more mature Inch team but their skill and knowledge got the better of the Mayfield girls in the first half. As always the young Mayfield team went back onto the pitch positive and motivated to make this half theirs but even with a good scoring half of 1 goal and 4 points they couldn't close the gap. The spirit of this Mayfield team has never faltered and they have always given 110% to the game, each player gave their all on the night and even though they may not have been victorious they have done their Manager, Selectors & Club proud. Exceptional on the night were Rosa Walsh and Sarah Kenny.

Junior East Cork Championship: The competition was formed by a group consisting of three teams. We were to play each other with the top two teams coming out of the group. On April the 10th, We travelled to Aghada for our first match of the championship. It didn't take Aghada long to start scoring and maintain their lead. Mayfield were out played in all positions on the pitch and unfortunately were beaten heavily on the day. On April 17th, Lisgoold travelled to Mayfield, and a much more balanced game was played with both teams being of a similar level giving all our girls the chance to play a good game. By half time, Mayfield were only down by onepoint, with a lot of play not converted into scores. As the game progressed Lisgoold got some great scores, and ended the game by taking a well deserved victory, beating Mayfield by four points. We wish them the best of luck in the final against Aghada.

14/04/2010   Mayfield U12 v Fermoy U12: On Friday evening 9th April, Our U12 girls travelled to Fermoy for our second league game. This proved to be a very tough game for the girls. In the first half they put in a great performance with numerous attempts to score but unfortunately the half time whistle blew without a score for Mayfield. The second half of the game began with all the girls coming back onto the pitch extremely positive about turning the game around. They did this scoring three goals and four points. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough on the night and we narrowly lost the game by just one goal. All of the team played with great spirit and worked very hard right through to the final whistle. Best on the night for Mayfield were Shauna O' Sullivan, Chloe O'Brien and Damiola Alamu. A big thank you to all the parents who travelled to Fermoy and for their great support.

Mayfield U14 V Erins Own U14: Saturday 10th April saw Erins Own travel to Mayfield to play in the U14 East Cork league. Mayfield were quick off the mark on the day and with the wind to their advantage in the first half played extremely well keeping the pressure on Erins Own at all times. The girls returned to the pitch with the first half wind put behind them and a fresh attitude that this half would be theirs as well. The fight was much harder in the second half as the wind was against them as well as a more determined Erins Own team. It was a fantastic match with both teams playing well but the victors on the day were Mayfield with a scoreline of Mayfield 4-12 to Erins Own 3-2. Well done to each Mayfield player all of who gave 110% on the day with exceptional playing from Shauna Kiely(C), Laura Lotty, Rossa Walsh, Lauren Barry, Amiee Teegan, Michelle McCormick, Lynn Hegarty, Lauren McCarthy & Shauna O'Sullivan.

Our 2009 U12 Team are to play Rockbán in the final of last years Mid-Cork league on Saturday 17th April at 3pm Mayfield Gaa pitches. This is a wonderful achievement and a great occasion for all concerned as Mayfield Ladies GAA was only established in January 2009. All Support would be greatly welcomed on the day.

Ilen Rovers came back strong in the 2nd half, but Mayfield were to hold their lead. It was a great game with both teams scoring well. Mayfield went on to win 4- 6 to 2- 5. 29/03/2010
Mayfield Vs St. Colmans: On Sunday 28th March, Mayfield Ladies u14 Team travelled to Shanagarry to play St Colman's. Kick off was at 5 o clock, the conditions were great for a good match, no wind, rain or sun to contend with. From the time of the first throw in Mayfield had a battle on their hands, they fought greatly in the first half but St Colmans were a force to be reckoned with. Mayfiled returned to the pitch at half time with heads held high and played with a determination that allowed only a 2 point score against them in the second half. All of the team played with great heart on the day with exceptional performances from Roisin Kennedy, Shauna O' Sullivan, Shauna Kiely (C) & Shauna Cronin. A special mention has to be given to our goalie on the day, Jessica Lenihan who had huge boots to fill in standing in for Linsey Martin, in Jessica's first outing of the season she found it hard going coming to grips with the game in the first half but found her footing in the second half with some exceptional saves which helped her team mates keep their heads up.Well done Jessica and all the team.

A word of congratulations to Cliona Cronin who won an All Ireland title in girls boxing recently. We are all very proud of your achievement Cliona. Also Congratulations to Shauna Kiely and Shauna Cronin who were placed in the first round to continue on the u13 Cork Development Squad.

Mayfield u12's had their first league match Sunday 28th March at home to Carrigtwohill. This game proved to be a very challenging match with both teams playing very well. Mayfield came out on top on the day due to the hard work of our back line of Shauna o Sullivan/ Lynn Hegarty/Patricia Carroll and some great goalkeeping from Abbey Blake. Captain on the day was Chloe O Brien who scored a great point from play and Alison Teahan who scored our only goal to win the match. Credit also due to Amy Horgan, Leah Harrington and Laura o Donovan who had a great game also.

U12/U14 Training continues on Wednesday nights at 6.30 - 7.30 and Sundays 12 - 1. New players always welcome. Contact Amanda 086 3414471 (u12)

Mayfield Fé14 Girls versus Aghada @ Mayfield 20/2/2010:
On Saturday afternoon the 20th of February, Mayfield Fé14 Girls played Aghada at home in their first challenge game of the season. Mayfield got off to an excellent start with a goal from Shauna Kiely (Captain) in the first few minutes of the first half. Aghada however, responded with a number of fine points. The home side fought back with some great points from Cliona Cronin and Aimee Teegan. Lauren Barry then went on to score from a well taken penalty. Half time saw Aghada ahead by one point.
Mayfields fighting spirit brought about a great start to the second half despite unfavourable conditions. A Strong Aghada team tested Mayfields defence, however the girls worked extra hard to keep them at bay. Mayfield went on to score two more fine goals and began the season with their first win. Shauna Cronin and Lauren McCarthy should also be mentioned for their efforts throughout the game.

15/09/2009
U14 Football Mid-Cork Championship - Mayfield versus Passage Saturday 12th September 2009:
On Saturday last 12th September, the U14 football team travelled to Passage for the mid Cork Football Championship. This was our first underage championship match so the girls were excited and a little nervous. Mayfield got a great start with Laura Lotty taking control of midfield and within a few minutes we got our opening point. As the game went on Mayfield became more confident and the scores started to come from Chloe Lynch, Aimee Teegan and a well worked goal by Lauren Barry settled them down. Mayfield's defence was brilliant as a whole and crowded Passage out when they attacked. During the second half Mayfield continued to play and score well with points from Sarah, Chloe, Cliona and Jennifer. Passage did get a goal, which they deserved as it was a great game played in good spirit and fantastic conditions. We are now looking forward to next game against Macroom. Well done girls.

Ladies Gaelic Football Lead the Way in Promoting Participation in Sport

24/06/2009   The Gaelic4Girls National Blitz Day took place at St Brigid's GAA ground, Kiltoom, Athlone on Saturday.

The blitz is the culmination of a national programme aimed at young girls aged 9 - 13 years from disadvantaged areas which are predominately non GAA strongholds.

This programme created by Ladies Gaelic Football has been supported by the Irish Sports Council Women in Sport Initiative for the past 3 years and has proven a huge success in increasing young girls' participation in sport.

This year the programme took place in eight venues around the Country, Cork City (Ballyphephane and Mayfield), Dublin (Balbriggan and Gloucester Street), Cavan Town, Derry City, Belfast, Limerick City, Mayo (Ballyhaunis) and Westmeath (Tang).

Ladies Gaelic Football President Pat Quill, said, "The Gaelic4Girls initiative has continued to be a resounding success. Sport is vital for disadvantaged communities and even more so for young girls who are often forgotten when it comes to inclusion in sport. This programme gives these young girls a positive outlet and a focal point to develop as both individuals and sportspeople."

Over 300 girls participated in the Gaelic4Girls National Blitz Day and over 90% of these young sports enthusiasts never played Ladies Football or any sport before taking part in this programme.

Stars of the ladies game such as Monaghan's Ciara McAnespie, Dublin's Denise Masterson and Mayo's Claire O'Hara assisted with the running of drills and sharing their knowledge of the game with the young participants.

The girls played in mini-games where they showcased their newly learned skills wearing their unique area colour t-shirt and the day concluded with all participants receiving a specially engraved medal from our President Pat Quill.
