League Semi-Final for U13 Hurling Team

20/10/2011   On Saturday 15th October 2011, Our fé13 Footballers took on Sam Maguires of Dunmanway in the Premier 2 County League Quarter-final and what a game it turned out to be. The game started at lightening pace with Maguires getting the better of the early exchanges with 1 goal and a point. Mayfield took a while to settle but quickly racked up a number of well worked points leaving the half time score Sam Maguires 1-1 to Mayfield 0-3.

The second half was full of tough tackling, great scores and no shortage of controversy. A great fight back by Mayfield saw them work their way back into the game with some great points as we hit the crossbar three times. The game was turned on its head by a penalty award to Sam Maguires which was duly converted. Mayfield continued to work for openings adding a couple of points but with the clock ticking fast, Mayfield were awarded a penalty which was buried in the bottom corner to send Mayfield into a two point lead with minutes left. Maguires however were awarded a free on the 13 yard line which somehow managed to hit the roof of the net. Maguires now had a one point lead with seconds left. Mayfield raced down the pitch and won a free which levelled the game and sent it in to extra time on a score Sam Maguires 3-1 to Mayfield 1-7.

Maguires had the better of the first period of extra time scoring two points. The second half began with a point from Sam Maguires to leave Mayfield three points down with minutes left. A point late on for Mayfield set up a grandstand finish and with the whistle 60 seconds away, Mayfield broke down a Sam Maguires attack, worked the ball out to Midfield and an exposed Maguires backline conceded the winning goal to give Mayfield a one point win on a fulltime scoreline Sam Maguires 2-8 to Mayfield 3-4.

This was a fantastic game and great credit is due to both teams who served up 80 mins of great football. Our Semi-Final meeting with Lisgoold is fixed to be played on Saturday 22nd October 2011 at 4pm in Mayfield. COme out and support the lads!!

U15 Team Advance in Championship

04/10/2011   A comprehensive team performance gave Mayfield the right to advance in the County U15 Hurling Championship in Cobh last night. Points were traded by both sides in the first quarter before Lee Cooney stepped up to rifle three goals to the Cobh net. A further two goals, One from Timmy Allen and good point scoring left Mayfield with a final tally of Mayfield 5-15 to Cobh 3-12. Well done lads!!

Great Win for U16 Team in Championship Replay

24/09/2011   Mayfield Fé 16 Team had a great win in the Q/final of the championship. After going down 2 points to no score after 5 mins the lads fought back to lead 5 points to 2 after 15 mins with points from Lee Cooney, Christopher McCarthy, Wayne Buckley and Darren Hayes. Passage came back into the game to lead 1-05 to 5 points at half time and had the wind with them in the second half.

Mayfield opened their account in the second half with 2 super points from Lee Cooney and Graham Buckley. Passage came back with 2 unanswered points to lead the game 1-07 to 7 points with 15 mins to go . Eoin Cronin got the next point for mayfield after a well worked move and Christopher McCarthy put Mayfield 1 point up with a super goal and added a point with 8 mins left. Passage brought it back to a point before Alex O Keffee added a point to put 2 points between the sides again. Passage scored a point with time nearly up but the final say was left to Alex O Keffee to get the last score and win the game for Mayfield. Best on the night for Mayfield was Adam Coyle who made two unbelieveable saves at the end of this game. Well done Lads!!

The S/final meeting with Aghinagh will take place under lights in Carrigtwohill next Monday night 26/9/2011 at 8pm.

Danny Hurley Tournament 2011

31/08/2011   The inaugural Danny Hurley Tournament 2011 will take place this Saturday 3rd September 2011 from 10.30am in Mayfield GAA Pitch.

Danny Hurley (1978 - 2009)
In memory of Danny Hurley, an energetic, sport-loving, much loved young man who died tragically on the 15th October 2009. Danny first came to the attention of his beloved Mayfield GAA club as a nine year old, when the budding star confidently strutted his stuff against the older boys at the annual Mayfield U12 Street Leagues competitions. What Danny lacked for in height he more than made up for in heart, energy, speed and skill. Ever since those early days when he impressively graced the Mayfield GAA pitches in Silverheights Danny became a leading member of all the underage Bord na Og Mayfield teams he was involved with. His heart and attitude regularly helped drive his team to victory. Throughout his underage career with Mayfield GAA Danny won numerous City Division championship and league medals and also earned the honour of representing his Club on the Seandún U15 Divisional panel.

However Danny's proudest moment in a Mayfield Jersey was the day he starred at wing back in Mayfield's Junior A City Championship winning team in September 1997. This was the first time in many years Mayfield's top team had won the Championship and Danny's contribution that day will never be forgotten. Danny continued to be an ever present member of Mayfield's Junior A team until he decided to emigrate to Scotland, but the club always remained in his heart which was evident by his guaranteed visit to the Club every time he returned to Ireland.

Sadly Missed by All at Mayfield GAA Club.

30/08/2011   Last weekend Cork U15 team played Tipperary in the final of the U15 Development Teams tournament. Mayfield were represented by Darren Hayes and Lee Cooney and both players did their Club and County proud with excellent performances. Darren had an excellent display at centre half back and contributed two points. Lee started the game at full forward and was influential in the final outcome with two goals and two points his tally. Congratulations and well done lads!!

U13 Hurling Reports

29/08/2011   Our Fé13 Hurlers took on Kilta-Óg in the "A" championship replay on Monday 22nd August 2011. The replay turned out to be just as exciting as the first game. Kilta-Óg began the game at a great pace which saw them go into a seven point lead just coming up to half time. Mayfield were second to every ball and just couldn`t get a foothold in the game. A goal just before half-time however gave the Mayfield team the belief they needed. Mayfield battled their way back into the game in the second half and eventually drawing level to send the game once again into extra time on a scoreline of Mayfield 2-4 to Kilta Óg 2-4.

Two points each in the first period of extra-time set the game up for a grandstand finish and Mayfield got the breakthrough with a goal with 3 minutes remaining, to win the game on a scoreline of Mayfield 2-9 to Kilta Óg 2-6. The game was watched by a huge home crowd and this helped to spur the lads on to a memorable win.

Next up was Inniscarra in the Quarter-final in Ballyanly. This was always going to be a tough game for our lads but a depleted Mayfield side were going to give it their best as always. The first half was a very even affair with a tough Inniscarra reargard proving very hard to breakdown. Mayfield however went in at half time ahead on a scoreline of Mayfield 1-3 to Inniscarra 1-2.

The second half proved very difficult for the lads with the large pitch and the effort began to take its toll. Inniscarra began to pick off their points. The ability to introduce five fresh players to Mayfields one began to tell as they raced into a five point lead. The Mayfield lads never gave up and a brilliant goal from Matt Murray brought Mayfield to within two points but despite our best efforts it wasn`t to be. All the lads can be proud of their efforts and the improvement they have shown over the last 12 months can only augur well for the future. The lads now look forward to the premier football league semi-final and the premier football championship.

U14 Team Significant Progress in 2011

22/08/2011   Our U14 Team have made significant progress in 2011 and have shown that with hard work from our young players and their coaches, success will not be far off. A narrow defeat to Kinsale after extra time in the County Semi-Final last Monday night was the culmination of a great year in both Football and Hurling for this Team. This added to reaching the Football Championship Final and the Hurling Championship Semi-Final points to the determination of the players and coaches to succeed this year. A real highlight for our U14 Team was Feile Peil Corcaigh 2011. A huge thanks to the Coaches of our U14 Team 2011.
